Understanding PTE

This initial section, lasting between 54 and 67 minutes, is the most extensive portion of the exam, encompassing seven distinct types of questions. It evaluates your speaking and writing capabilities in an academic context.

Here's how to approach each question type:

Personal Introduction: This segment allows you to acquaint yourself with the PTE test's technology, aiding your preparation for subsequent speaking and listening tasks. Although it doesn't impact your overall score, it's essential for practice. You'll have 25 seconds to prepare after reading the prompt, followed by 30 seconds to record your response, with only one recording attempt allowed.

Read Aloud: Task - Read the displayed text out loud. Prompt Length - Up to 60 words Skills Assessed - Reading and speaking Response Time - Adjusts based on text length.

Repeat Sentence: Task - Echo a sentence after hearing it. Prompt Length - 3–9 seconds Skills Assessed - Listening and speaking Response Time - 15 seconds

Describe Image: Task - Detail the shown image. Prompt Length - N/A Skills Assessed - Speaking Response Time - 40 seconds

Re-tell Lecture: Task - Summarize a lecture in your words after listening or watching. Prompt Length - Up to 90 seconds Skills Assessed - Listening and speaking Response Time - 40 seconds

Answer Short Question: Task - Respond briefly to a question. Prompt Length - 3–9 seconds Skills Assessed - Listening and speaking Response Time - 10 seconds

Summarize Written Text: Task - Condense a text into a single summary sentence. Prompt Length - Up to 300 words Skills Assessed - Reading and writing Response Time - 10 minutes

Essay: Task - Craft a 200–300 word essay on a specified topic. Prompt Length - 2–3 sentences Skills Assessed - Writing Response Time - 20 minutes

Part 2: Reading This section, with a duration of 29 to 30 minutes, features five distinct question types. The PTE Academic tests integrated skills, and notably, one item ('Reading and Writing: Fill in the Blanks') evaluates both reading and writing abilities.

The listening component, lasting between 30 and 43 minutes, comprises eight varied types of questions. These questions are based on audio or video clips that play automatically, each only once, and note-taking is permitted during this part.

Summarize Spoken Text Task: Summarize a recording in 50–70 words. Audio Length: 60–90 seconds Skills Tested: Listening and writing Response Time: Variable

Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers Task: Choose multiple correct answers for a question based on the recording's content or tone. Audio Length: 40–90 seconds Skills Tested: Listening Response Time: Variable

Fill in the Blanks Task: Type the missing words into the gaps of a transcript based on the audio. Audio Length: 30–60 seconds Skills Tested: Listening and writing Response Time: Variable

Highlight Correct Summary Task: Select the summary that best captures the essence of the audio clip. Audio Length: 30–90 seconds Skills Tested: Listening and reading Response Time: Variable
